The Gold Mexican 50 Peso coin was one of the few large world bullion coins prior to the introduction of the South African Krugerrand. First issued in 1921 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mexico's independence from Spain, the Mexican Gold Coin 50 Pesos is also known as the Centenario.
During the years 1949-1972 there were 3.9 million 50 peso coins restruck, usually dated 1947. Restrikes with a matte finish were produced in 1996.
