On November 24, 1986 the American Silver Eagle was released as the official silver bullion coin of the United States. It is guaranteed to contain one troy ounce of .9999 pure silver and is struck only in the 1 ounce denomination which has a nominal face value of one dollar. Its weight and content are certified by the United States Mint and authorized by the United States Congress.
The “Walking Liberty” design appears on the obverse, which had originally been used on the half-dollar coin of the United States from 1916 to 1947. This design had been a public favorite and one of the most beloved designs of any United States coinage. A heraldic eagle is portrayed on the reverse
