Designer Spotlight: Tiffany & Co.

Tiffany & Co

For Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange’s first designer spotlight, it is only fitting to begin our series with the world-renowned, American institution: Tiffany & Co.

Tiffany & Co. began in 1837 as a fancy goods store in New York City. Founded by Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young, the company became a hub for wealthy Americans looking for exotic artifacts and worldly wonders. The company didn’t become a name for diamonds and jewelry until the 1840s when Charles Tiffany saw the opportunity to purchase jewels from French aristocrats fleeing France during the abdication of King Louie-Philippe. After acquiring a large amount of diamonds and jewelry during that time, Charles Tiffany was dubbed “the king of diamonds.”

From there the company grew and became a staple designer that showcased a newly discovered American style. For the last 178 years, Tiffany & Co. has been a symbol of supreme craftsmanship and American ingenuity.

It wasn’t until 1867 that Tiffany & Co. became an international sensation. In that year at the Paris World’s Fair, a European jury awarded the American jeweler the grand prize in silver craftsmanship. In the following years, Tiffany & Co. would grow to accommodate both American and European demand with branches in London, Paris, and Geneva. Tiffany & Co. would go on to stun the world for decades to come in following World’s Fair events.

In 1878, Tiffany & Co. made history again when it acquired one of the largest yellow diamonds the world had ever seen. The diamond, which measured 287.42 carats, was cut down to 128.54 carats with 82 facets. This gave the diamond its iconic fire-like glow. The magnificent stone was dubbed the Tiffany Diamond and has only been worn by two women—Mary Whitehouse and Audrey Hepburn.

Tiffany & Co. even transformed the style of engagement rings. In 1886, the company began making rings that set the diamond higher off the band in order to highlight a single gemstone. This style became known as the Tiffany Setting and is one of the most popular styles of engagement rings today.

Tiffany & Co. has astounded the world with its dedication to fine jewelry. The company is intertwined with American style and history.
